Timbral Openings and Closings Other than F1/H2

Lower timbral closings and openings, such as those that occur at the F1/H3 and even F1/H4 junctures, can often be clearly heard as well. Earlier in the recording cited above of Ravel’s Kaddish sung by José Van Dam (See Appendix 5: Youtube Examples: Example 3), the mini-turn of the F1/H3 crossing can be heard when Van Dam sings a melisma (at one minute into the recording) on /ɑ/ as it rises from F3 to Bb3. The mini-turn happens at Ab3, about a fifth below the primary turn of /ɑ/ (figure 25).
